Empire Supporters Club to Honor Clint Mathis in 13th Minute of the NY-LA Match

Supporters Special Tribute to a Franchise Legend

Harrison, NJ – August 10, 2010 — The oldest supporters club in MLS will pay a very special tribute to Clint Mathis during the New York Red Bulls v. Los Angeles Galaxy match this Saturday August 14, 2010 in honor of his recent retirement from professional club soccer.

The former Metrostar and Red Bulls forward announced his retirement last week and hangs up his boots as one of the most beloved and admired players in New York soccer history. In five seasons with New York, Mathis tallied 45 goals in all competitions, including #45 in 2007 which briefly gave him the all time franchise record, previously held by Gionvanni Savarese, until 2009 when current New York hitman Juan Pablo Angel surpassed Mathis’s mark.

Known for his flair and confidence as a player Mathis leaves behind an incredible legacy in New York soccer history and one that endeared him to countless supporters. “Simply put Clint Mathis is a legend here, the things he did on the field when he played here were awe inspiring. He meant so much to so many supporters in New York. He was our first true superstar.” said ESC member Anthony Poulin.

During the 13th minute of play against the Galaxy the supporters plan on unveiling a special tribute banner on honor of Clint Mathis as well as displaying hundreds of special “MATHIS 13” cards while they sing their songs. ESC will also be presenting Mathis with a special jersey as a gift from the fans.
